Established in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School, it was the fourth teachers’ college in the United States and the first to be founded outside of New England. In 1899, it became the nation’s first normal school to offer a four-year curriculum, earning the name Michigan State Normal College. The institution achieved university status in 1959, adopting its present name, Eastern Michigan University.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Eastern Michigan University Presidential Scholarships, applicants must:
- Be a high school senior graduating in 2024 or 2025.
- Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and achieve either a composite ACT score of 25 or a combined SAT score of 1200 (Critical Reading + Math).
- Note: SAT/ACT requirements are waived for students with a GPA of 3.85 or higher.
- Apply for admission to Eastern Michigan University and submit all official transcripts and test scores by the scholarship deadline.
Presidential Scholarship Application Deadline
The application period for the Fall 2025 Presidential Scholarship has closed. For Fall 2026 applicants, the application will reopen in Fall 2025.
Be sure to note these key dates for a smooth application process:
- December 13, 2025 – Deadline to submit all application materials, complete the campus visit, and provide all official admission documents to Eastern Michigan University.
- January ?, 2026 – Notification of students advancing to the second round.
- February ?, 2026 – Finalist interviews. Selected candidates will be invited for an in-person interview on campus or offered a virtual interview if located far from Michigan.
