Founded in 1537 as a school of Protestant theology, the University of Lausanne in Switzerland was transformed into a full university in 1890. It is the country’s second-oldest university and ranks among the world’s oldest continuously operating institutions of higher learning.
UNIL Master’s Scholarships for International Students
Master’s Scholarships are merit-based excellence awards granted exclusively to students who have graduated from a foreign university with outstanding academic achievements.
Eligible Level and Fields of Study
All Master’s programs offered by UNIL are eligible for the scholarship except the following:
- Master’s degrees from the Faculty of Medicine
- Master of Education
- Master of Law jointly offered by the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne
- Master of Criminal Law and all specialized Master’s programs
- Master of Science in Didactics of Physical Education and Sports
- Master of Science in Health Sciences
- All MAS programs (continuing/further education programs)
Note: For the Master of Laws, only the specializations in International and Comparative Law and Legal Theory are eligible for scholarship applications.
Scholarship Benefits and Duration
The scholarship is granted for the standard duration of the chosen Master’s program. Recipients receive CHF 1,600 per month from 15 September to 15 July (10 months per year) throughout the program’s length—typically one and a half to two years, depending on the course. The scholarship will be discontinued in cases of definitive failure after the first year.
In addition, scholarship holders are exempt from fixed course registration fees, apart from a mandatory semester fee of CHF 80.
Eligibility Requirement
To apply, candidates must:
- Hold a foreign university degree equivalent to a UNIL bachelor’s degree before beginning the chosen Master’s program.
- Demonstrate outstanding academic performance with excellent results.
- Meet the minimum language requirement of B2 level (European Language Portfolio) in either French or English, depending on the language of instruction for the selected program.
- Not have been previously enrolled at UNIL.
- Pay the non-refundable administrative fee of CHF 200.
Language Proficiency Requirement
For Master’s programs taught in French, a minimum French proficiency level of C1 is recommended, while for programs taught in English, an English proficiency level of at least C1 is advised.
How to Apply
Applicants must complete the online application form and upload their full application file in PDF format (see the document titled “List of documents for an application” for details). Applications submitted by email or incomplete files will not be considered.
Please note: There is no need to apply separately to the UNIL Admission Office (SII). The Master’s Scholarship application also serves as an application for admission to the selected Master’s program and functions as the matriculation form at UNIL.
